Human Impacts, Resilience and Management Challenges for Indonesian Coral Reefs

Coral reef management in Indonesia is inadequate to cope with increasing pressures from the growing human population. And importantly, the capacity of local managers and government to prevent changes to coral reef ecosystems, because they always lag behind the rate of degradation. My research is to develop a model-based tool to help local managers in Karimunjawa National Park, Central Java; to identify the threshold of their reef communities to future local disturbances such as herbivorous reef fish depletion and intensive rock anchoring. The model will be incorporated within an information package to communicate resilience knowledge to reef managers as well as delivering management actions that can promote resilience and sustainable use of reef sites in KNP.
